Men's Health Q&A

What is men’s health?

Men’s health includes any health care focused on diagnosing or treating conditions that affect men. Dawson Med offers preventive care medicine along with diagnosis and treatment of health conditions affecting men.

What are common men’s health concerns?

In addition to common health problems that affect men and women, health concerns specific to men include:

Low testosterone

The male sex hormone, testosterone, decreases as part of the natural aging process. Low testosterone causes decreased sex drive, fatigue, reduced muscle mass, and erectile dysfunction. About 2 out of 100 men may develop low testosterone and your risks of it increase if you are overweight or have diabetes.

Prostate cancer

The male reproductive system includes a walnut-sized gland below the bladder. The prostate gland makes seminal fluid to support and transport sperm. Prostate cancer affects the prostate.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)

Infections you get through sexual contact with another person are called sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many people do not experience symptoms with STDs, but men may experience:

  • Burning or itching penis
  • Penial discharge
  • Pelvis pain
  • Blisters, sores, or bumps on penis or mouth
  • Painful urination or bowel movements
  • Frequent urination

Over 20 million people in the United States get an STD diagnosis annually.

Erectile dysfunction

Impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection long enough to have sexual intercourse. Ongoing impotence may signify underlying health conditions in need of treatment. Treating the underlying health problem, like hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, or diabetes, often resolves ED.

Premature ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is common and occurs when you ejaculate sooner during sexual intercourse activities than you or your partner would like. As many as 1 out of 3 men experience premature ejaculation from time to time.

How are men’s health conditions treated?

Medication treats or manages many common men’s health issues, like erectile dysfunction (ED), low testosterone, and premature ejaculation. Common oral medications used for erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation include:

  • Avanafil (Stendra)
  • Sildenafil (Viagra)
  • Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn)
  • Tadalafil (Adcirca, Cialis)

Dawson Med first determines whether your men’s health problems are caused by underlying health issues that require treatment. If you have high blood pressure or diabetes, managing these health conditions often resolves your men’s health concerns.
